Did you know that Greensboro, Alabama, is known as the Catfish Capital of Alabama? In fact, this little town of around 2,500 people nestled in the heart of the Black Belt was once one of the largest producers of farm raised catfish in the country with over 7000 water acres!
The catfish industry, despite recent decline due to dramatic surge in feed prices, inferior imitation products from overseas, recession and disease, is one of the largest employers in The Black Belt employing approximately over 3000 people. At one point, Greensboro was rumored to have more water than dirt! In fact, for years, Greensboro held a pageant and crowned the Alabama Catfish Queen. (Now there’s a title to envy!)
All Hail the Catfish Queen!
